Tourism is great when you can travel. After all the challenges of 2020 and even some in 2021, traveling has returned to normality, at least to an extent. There are some preparations that one must undertake in order to leave their own country or enter another. These preparations have nothing to do with the destination, but rather with one’s health, and that of the citizens of the destination country.
But, the destination is as important, particularly if one wants to actually be a tourist and explore their vacation location. This time, the destination is Venice, Italy. Here are the top sights to see in Venice.
St. Mark’s Basilica
This basilica is one of the most visited locations in Venice. It is located on St. Mark’s Square and is one of the most recognizable buildings in Venice. It has had a lot of attention and with good reason, it has played a large part in the religious history of Italy, particularly the North.
The front of the church has amazing ornate decorations and the interior only gets better. There are frescos and domed ceilings, which are traditional for churches of this period. The ceilings are painted, of course.
St. Mark’s Square
While the basilica might be one of the most visited tourist locations in Venice, everybody knows about the square it is located on, St. Mark’s Square. It is one of the most photographed locations in Venice, easily featured on most postcards and wallpapers. It is also one of those locations in Venice which can easily be flooded when there are rainy days and when the water level rises.
The square also hosts multiple famous sights and locations such as the Basilica mentioned above, but also the eponymous bell tower, not to mention Doge’s Palace and the Torre dell’Orologio, which literally translates to clock tower.
The Grand Canal
One does not visit Venice and ignore the grand canal, the largest of the many canals in Venice. It is a tourist destination where you can see anything from boats to the famous gondolas. The grand canal passes through the entirety of the city in an S-like shape. It hosts most of the city’s water traffic and is the destination for those who want to experience Venice on the water.
The Rialto Bridge
This bridge is the most famous bridge in Venice. It is also the most visited bridge. During tourist seasons, you will find a lot of people on the bridge. Given how many people visit the bridge, you can also find plenty of shops and stalls on the bridge, which sell anything from accessories, souvenirs, to jewelry. The best time to visit the bridge is early in the morning when most people are still asleep and unlikely to be anywhere but in bed.
Venice is an amazing tourist destination, great to visit during almost any time of the year. Whenever you get the opportunity and are in Venice, try to visit these locations. There are plenty more to discover so explore the city when you get the chance.
